This course covers everything in the Part 101 course, plus the additional knowledge required to operate under a Part 102 UAOC. That's the certificate that allows pilots to operate outside the Part 101 rules. Our Part 101 course is not a prerequisite; it's included.
On its own, this certificate carries the same legal privilege as Part 101: flying within 4km of an aerodrome. Activities such as flying over people, flying a drone heavier than 25 kg, agricultural spraying, or flying beyond visual line of sight become available once you're operating under an organisation's UAOC. This certificate is your first step toward that, and we'll help you complete the rest of your pathway to it. If you need a UAOC, get in touch.
You need a Part 102 certificate if you intend to:
- Fly a drone over people without their permission
- Fly a drone with a combined weight over 25kg
- Operate over property without the landowner's permission
- Carry out agricultural work, spraying, fertiliser application, or bait dropping
- Undertake any other activity the CAA classifies outside standard Part 101 conditions
Good to know: holding this certificate on its own doesn't grant any of the above privileges. Those become available once you're flying under an organisation's UAOC with the appropriate exemptions, which requires an annual Operational Competency Assessment once you're operating under one.
$1,295 covers:
- Full online theory, covering Part 101 and Part 102 content together
- Two final exams, 80% pass mark, multiple exam attempts included
- One practical flight assessment with an approved examiner
- Nationwide flight assessment access, with 22 active examiners across 16 cities in New Zealand
- Issue of Part 102 digital certificate
Not included:
- OCA (Operational Competency Assessment), $629/year, once you're flying under a UAOC
- Exposition writing service, if your business needs a UAOC, from $2,000
Note: theory, exams, and flight test must all be completed within 12 months of purchase.
By the end of this course, you'll be able to:
- Read NZ airspace rules and charts, and determine your drone's legal altitude limits
- Distinguish between controlled and uncontrolled airspace, and understand what that means for your flight
- Log flights and check local council rules using Airshare
- Locate air traffic control contacts before you fly
- Plan and document a Part 102 flight, including checking NOTAMs (official notices to airspace users) and airspace supplements
- Apply basic meteorology and GPS fundamentals to flight planning
- Fly confidently in ATTI mode if GPS signal is lost
Final assessment: two online exams (80% pass mark) and a practical flight test with an approved examiner.
